Yeah, it was BUCKY who killed Hitler. Why do you think he’s so fantastically awesome and I just love him so much? He’s my favorite character in the history of the universe.
And here we have Bucky, explaining the death of Hitler, and offering to kill Osborn.
Who can not love this flaming chunk of badass?I always assumed Hitler had a double, or several, and Bucky killed one while Jim Hammond killed the other.
Honestly I despise “XXX Really Killed Hitler” concepts.
To me, Hitler’s real death is pretty much perfect, to change it to “Oh no, Hero X killed them to up their badass level” has the exact opposite of the intended effect on me.
I’m not a fan either, especially if it’s a world heavily based on our own like Marvel. I mean, we all know how the story ends, and pretending that it happened some other way is completely breaking suspension of disbelief, because the stories about WWII are ingrained into our hindbrain — it’s like if 50 years from now they wrote that some supervillain did 9/11, some superhero killed Bin Laden or Gaddafi or whatever. The mythology and legend of our wars is something that you shouldn’t mess with too much. It’s too unbelievable to audiences, and pretty disrespectful depending on what you’re doing.
I am always kind of iffy when writers have super heroes heavily involved in historical stuff, I mean I can take heroes having been in WWII but when you get into the specifics it can get weird or disrespectful.
That said the Human Torch kills Hitler thing was first published in YOUNG MEN vol. 2 #24, published by Atlas in 1953 (Marvel didn’t even exist) so the war was still fairly recent in people’s minds back then. Writers just keep having characters refer to that moment a lot when Jim Hammond walks into panel, I guess it’s a form of respect or to indicate to the reader that he’s a badass (and he is but for other reasons) and frankly one or twice is OK but it gets old.
As for the Bucky, Jim, and Hitler dilemma? Well Hitler gets cloned a lot in the Marvel universe (Hate Monger anyone, and he started as a F4 villain!) and IIRC there was even a Cap story where Steve talks to a Hitler clone that was unaware that he was a Hitler clone (it was quite interesting until the writer went to the obvious HE IS HITLER’S CLONE OF COURSE EVIL route)
I think at this point a lot of characters have killed Hitler.
