Little known Fact: 616!Steve is not from Brooklyn he was born and grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
He was first identified as having grown up on the Lower East Side during the Stern/Byrne run, and it is a homage to Captain America co-creator Jack Kirby who also grew up on the Lower East Side around the same time Steve was suppose to (BTW Steve also had the same birthyear as Kirby which was 1917 although Marvel moved that to 1922).
I like the fact that he grew up in LES, especially when you count the fact that in the 1930’s LES was a poor lower class worker’s neighborhood which is something that does give a lot to Steve’s background and roots as a runt from a modest urban background, especially if you consider that in 616 he was a poor kid with strong working ethics (also instilled to him by his mother).
And like Brooklyn LES is also very culturally diverse (and seeing how in 616 Steve’s parents are Irish immigrants it makes sense that they would have settled there) and I like the thought of Captain America coming from a place that is culturally diverse.
Why did they change it to Brooklyn for the movie? I guess “I am just a kid from the Lower East Side of Manhattan” doesn’t have the same ring to it.
BTW in the first origin that Steve ever had, he was a kid from the suburbs of Maryland. He was also a Senator’s son and he had a brother who died in Pearl Harbor which is what inspired Steve to enlist (which kind of contradicted the fact that Steve had received the serum and was Cap way before that happened) but no one liked that origin and it later got retconned into all being false memories implanted by the Government from brainwashing him.
