Captain America is not Stupid.

thementalstateofdolphins:

Okay, I am happy to have this fandom growing, I am happy the Avengers movie is a success, I am happy that people like these characters, but let me make something very clear: Captain America is not stupid.

Yes, he is from the 1940s.  Yes, he is going to be disoriented, yes he is going to struggle at first, but he is not stupid.

From marvel.com:

Captain America had a very high intelligence as well as agility, strength, speed, endurance, and reaction time superior to any Olympic athlete who ever competed. The Super-Soldier formula that he had metabolized had enhanced all of his bodily functions to the peak of human efficiency.

No, you guys, he’s not going to struggle with a DVD player, or a computer, or the internet.  He is not going to be inept or breaking things.  Steve Rogers canonically learns very quickly.  He’s a master strategist, I think he can figure out how to use a microwave.

I get that you think it’s cute or whatever, but it’s not canon.  It’s not even canon in the movies.  Yes, he’s not overly-fond of technology, but he can use it.  No, he’s not Tony Stark Smart, but Tony Stark is within the Top 10 most intelligent people in the world, so saying ‘But Tony can do it’ is not a fair comparison.  He’s up there with Reed Richards the inter-dimensional portal king, so no.  Not fair.  Plus Tony is crap at explaining things.

Oh, and one other thing: Steve is not a prude.

Yes, he is used to the 1940s, but he was in the army.  He said fuck, shit, damn and golly.  He probably heard all sorts of raunchy stories and songs; he probably got dragged around to some less than savoury places, and I doubt that he really minded, because yeah, Steve is a nice guy and he’s patriotic and just and all that shit, but he’s still a guy.  Hell, he’s still a human, and last time I checked he wasn’t an asexual human, so just… no.

/gets off soapbox.

I don’t think Steve ever had problems adjusting to technology even in the comics.

His problems were always more social and cultural and later on it was him dealing with the fact that he was alone in the world because everyone he knew had either died or moved on without him.

But technology? Nope.

In the 60’s comics right after he’s been defrosted for a few days you see him using tech that Tony gives him and fiddling with the computers and electronics in Avengers mansion. In several comics in the Avengers, you see him using computers and other modern tech, he even owned a laptop.

In Ultimates you see him being more grumpy about people swearing a lot in movies and being crude, but he never had trouble adapting to technology.

The best example was in Ultimate Avengers where Clint and Carol are asking Fury how much Steve knows about his psychopathic son, and Fury tells them that they must assume Steve knows everything since he absorbs information and learns things really quickly. Next panel, you see Steve hacking computers and looking up information and data about his son.

The man is a soldier and a spy of some sorts, he has to be up with the latest modern technology or else he will fail in what he does. He isn’t Tony Stark computer smart but he has the ability, the smarts, and initiative to learn how to use a computer and know how it works better than the average person (plus Steve’s intellect resides more in battle tactics, military strategies and trying to predict what the enemy will do which is pretty damn hard and usually Tony and the Avengers refer to him when it comes to those things).

About him being prudish? Yeah, no, in the movie he hanged with Bucky and the Howling Commandos so there’s nothing shocking that anyone can do that will make him gape and gasp (not even Tony, at the most I think Tony will just make him get annoyed, grumpy and facepalm a lot). 616!Steve hanged out with Bucky, The Howling Commandos, Namor and occasionally hangs out with Nick Fury, Nick motherfucking Fury.

Let me tell you about 616!Fury, Movie!Fury says bullshit, motherfucker, and is snarky but 616!Fury takes all of that and amps it up to 11 and adds some craziness. 616!Fury takes cussing and inappropriateness into an artform and makes the toughest of men cry little baby tears just by letting his mouth run.

Oh and there is Logan, 616!Steve wouldn’t be scandalized by anything after knowing Logan and Fury.

Ultimate!Steve doesn’t like people cussing outside of the field but not because he finds the words offensive but because he finds them to be crude, he’s very old fashioned in that sense.

So yeah I can tell when people don’t know the character when they seriously believe Steve is tech challenged and prude (I usually don’t mind jokes, although they aren’t as funny to me anymore).
